Paediatric Chiropractic

Paediatric Chiropractic is a non-invasive, drug free way to solve many health issues with children. It is amazing how our kid’s first journey, through the birth canal, can have them arrive out of balance. From there, as we know, there are endless activities that could result in a young one’s spine, cranium and body needing an adjustment.

Nervous system issues that arise in newborn babies can result from in-utero constraints and the birth process and can affect the way your baby turns their head to breastfeed, it may restrict their shoulder and neck mobility, can lead to plagiocephaly (flat head) from the way the baby was lying in utero and spinal, cranial and peripheral joints may also be affected during the birth process.

At Oasis Health, we are very passionate about providing the best care for your newborn babies and children. We make your children feel comfortable in the paediatric room with plenty of toys to play with, books to read and the kiddies colouring table. There is even a
clownfish adjusting table for little toddlers which they can climb up on all by themselves!

Newborn Babies, Toddlers, School-age Children, teenagers & young adults can benefit from Chiropractic Treatment.

Gentle, safe paediatric techniques may help in the treatment of many general childhood challenges. A better functioning nervous system will allow for a stronger healthier body and it will allow for optimal nervous system and organ function. Asthma, poor digestion, poor movement, bed wetting, glue ear, painful joints & poor balance are some of the examples that may well indicate a nervous system issue that can be addressed.

How Active is Your Baby? Is your baby rolling over to both sides, crawling when they should, walking and talking when they should? Does your child have the appropriate muscle tone and strength for their age? Crawling is the essential pathway to an active child. A baby’s nervous system may be disrupted if they are displaying bum shuffling, if they are crawling dragging one leg behind, or if they are rolling over to one side but not to the other side and chiropractic assessment and care can help with your baby’s development.

Pregnancy Chiropractic Care

Pregnancy Chiropractic CARE

A woman's body goes through many changes during pregnancy. Combined with a growing baby and uterus, the woman's pelvis becomes increasingly unstable as the pregnancy evolves. Not surprisingly, this very often leads to lower back pain, and a myriad of other discomforts.

Chiropractic adjustments and myofascial release techniques are a safe and effective treatment for pregnant mums. It will help to make the pregnant mother more comfortable and keep her revived during the journey.

Regular chiropractic care during your pregnancy can help balance your pelvis and prepare the lumbopelvic region and create space for the birth process. Webster technique uses sacral analysis and chiropractic adjustments to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation or sacro-iliac joint dysfunction. Release of the uterine ligaments and their attachment points and release of the surrounding soft tissue membranes helps to alleviate stress on the pelvis. Babies often lie transverse, posterior or breech and this may be stressful for the baby to exit during the birth process and may make the baby more susceptible to trauma to shoulder or hips during the birth process.

Cranio-sacral Therapy

Cranio-sacral Therapy

The craniosacral system includes the soft tissue and neural tissue of the cranium (head) and the spine from the neck down to the sacral area (pelvis). Cranio-sacral Therapy has been defined (Upledger Institute) as a “gentle hands on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole body health and performance”.

The central nervous system is made up of the brain & spinal cord and cranio-sacral techniques influence the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.

Cranio-sacral technique is a non-invasive gentle technique that can be used on all ages from newborn babies to the elderly patient. It is also a fabulous technique to use during pregnancy care and help relieves tension of the pregnant body. Post-concussion injuries
and bumps to the head (toddlers) also respond well to cranio-sacral therapy treatment.

Restrictions in cranial mobility and neural tension can affect the optimum health of the nervous system. Cranio-sacral therapy works on removing these restrictions using breathing techniques and palpation which allows for better cranial mobility.

Applied Kinesiology & Retained Neonatal Reflexes & Neuro Emotional Technique (NET)

Applied Kinesiology

In its most basic explanation Kinesiology, or muscle response testing, works on muscle groups to identify organs and systems, which may not be functioning to optimum levels.

Anything that causes stress to a person also causes weakness in their muscles. Once armed with the knowledge of exactly what is contributing to a person’s health issue the therapist then works at removing the imbalances and releasing neurological blockages, which can inhibit the body’s natural immune system from functioning effectively.

Kinesiology can assist in retraining the body to respond in a more positive way, encouraging better absorption of nutrients and an overall improvement of immune system function and general health.

Retained Neonatal Reflexes

In the womb and in early life, when the decision-making process has not fully developed, your brainstem has several reflexes called ‘primitive’ or ‘neonatal’ reflexes. They help you to grow properly and safely. For example, they help you in the birthing process, breastfeeding and gripping onto things.

As you mature these reflexes are no longer needed so they take a ‘back seat’ and the higher brain takes control. This is an essential and normal stage of your development, allowing you to perform the more complex tasks required in classroom learning, movement control and social interactions.

However, due to birth trauma or developmental restrictions these reflexes might remain dominant. This means that your nervous system will automatically react inappropriately and undesirably in certain situations. This will adversely affect your brain development, learning and behaviour. This is Retained Neonatal Reflex.

Using specific techniques developed by Australian Chiropractors and now taught all over the world, we can assist the integration of these reflexes that could be holding your bright children back.

Neonatal Reflexes:

  • Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex
  • Lack of concentration, difficulty sitting upright and motion sickness
  • Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex
  • Walking on toes, poor posture and co-ordination
  • Moro Reflex
  • Over-reactive and over-sensitive (common in ADHD)
  • Juvenile Suck and Rooting Reflexes
  • Speech, articulation and dental problems
  • Palmar Reflex
  • Jumbling up letters, poor writing expression and spelling, slouching at the desk/computer
  • Spinal Galant Reflex
  • Trouble sitting still and poor bladder control
  • Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex
  • Easily distracted, poor coordination and messy handwriting
  • Fear Paralysis Reflex
  • Withdrawn, shyness, tantrums, anxiety

Neuro Emotional Work (NET)

Emotions such as fear, anger, grief, and many others can negatively affect us long after the original event that caused them. When our body fails to “let go” of these emotions we can find ourselves with unexplained aversions, self-sabotaging behaviours, destructive beliefs, phobias, and many chronic physical problems. We use an approach called Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) to identify and help you let go of “stuck” emotional patterns.

If we’re in a weakened state due to poor nutrition, stress or physical trauma, everyday emotions may not resolve naturally. Later in our lives when we experience a similar situation, the old emotional response kicks in.

We rarely see the link between the past event and our present situation. NET can help identify the unresolved real (or imagined) event and help your body release its lingering emotional charge. For good!

People used to think emotions resided entirely in their brain. Now we know other parts of the body can hold emotions too. Ever felt butterflies in your stomach before a speech, referred to something as “pain in the neck” or felt a “lump in your throat”? Clearly, emotions happen in our body, not just our brain?

Using NET, we find these stuck, negatively charged emotions stored in the body and help you release them. It’s fast and fun. And it can dramatically improve your health. Finding and balancing these stuck memory loops is done with the help of simple muscle testing. This helps determine if your body is in harmony with a particular concept or idea which is linked to an unresolved emotional event. NET is a safe, effective and natural way to instantly resolve longstanding problems that have an emotional component.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release Technique utilises soft tissue & fascia releases of muscle & ligamentous tissue which improves mobility, reduces pain by relaxing contracting musculature, improves blood and lymphatic circulation and stimulates the stretch reflex in muscles.

This technique is very gentle but extremely effective. Many patients seek myofascial and trigger point therapy treatments after losing flexibility or function following an injury or if experiencing ongoing back, shoulder, hip, neck pain or any soft tissue area causing pain.

Some other conditions where myofascial release therapy may be used include Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia or migraine headaches.

Pain can be generated from skeletal muscle or connective tissues that are bound down by tight fascia. The restriction or contraction inhibits blood flow to the muscle and gets worse without physical treatment.

Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy

Cold Level Laser Therapy or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and is thought to help accelerate the healing process. It can be used on patients who suffer from a variety of acute and chronic
conditions in order to help eliminate pain, swelling, reduce spasms and increase functionality.

Cold lasers are handheld devices used by the clinician and are often the size of a flashlight. The laser is placed directly over the injured area for 30 seconds to several minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the dose provided by the cold laser unit. During this time, the non-thermal photons of light that are emitted from the laser pass through the skins layers (the dermis, epidermis, and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin). Once the light energy passes through the layers of skin and reaches the target area, it is absorbed and interacts with the light sensitive elements in the cell. This process can be compared to photosynthesis in plants - sunlight is absorbed by plants, which is then converted to usable energy so that the plant can grow. When cells absorb this light energy, it initiates a series of events in the cell that is theorized to eventually result in normalizing damaged or injured tissue, a reduction in pain, inflammation, edema and an
overall reduction in healing time by increasing intracellular metabolism.

Laser therapy can be used to address many different acute and chronic conditions and pain such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Sprains
  • Post-surgery
  • Muscle spasm
  • Whiplash
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Frozen shoulder
  • … and much more

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage is a deep massage which locates and repairs physical damage, while stimulating the body's own repair mechanism. The massage is applied directly to the skin, and usually uses a lubricant such as oil to help in deep penetration.

Remedial Massage is often used to treat the following conditions:

  • Achilles; Arthritis; Back Pain; Cartilage damage; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; Frozen Shoulder; Groin Strain; Hamstring Injuries; Tendinitis; Repetitive Strain Injury; Shin Splints; Tennis Elbow; Whiplash

Although the primary intention of remedial massage is not relaxation, positive side effects normally include better sleep, increased mobility and more energy.

Lester Cox technique

Remedial Massage/ Corrective Manipulation Technique of muscles, tendons and ligaments:

If it is a structural problem you are having, this technique can help you with the use of a combination of Remedial Massage and a corrective manipulation technique which focuses on ensuring the correct alignment of muscles, tendons and ligaments to enable correct function to occur and thus eliminating pain and inflammation. A very high percentage of lower back problems can in fact be caused by muscular misalignment in the gluteal area. This technique can be extremely helpful for people with ongoing pain and/or injuries.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue, releasing toxins and deeply held tension points, while promoting blood and oxygen circulation. Deep Tissue Massage is both a corrective and therapeutic treatment.

Focusing on specific problems it can be of benefit to the following:

  • chronic pain; fibromyalgia; muscle tension; osteoarthritis pain; postural problems repetitive strain injury; sports injuries.

It is common to feel some slight soreness during or after a session and patients are encouraged to drink plenty of water to help eliminate toxins stirred up during treatment.

Nutritional Kinesiology is a holistic approach and identifies and attempts to resolve the cause of people’s health problems, improving their immune system function and reducing musculoskeletal and nervous system stress. The nervous system can be affected by physical, chemical, or emotional stresses to the body. These stressors manifest in imbalances in the patient’s body.

Kinesiologists address the physiological and mechanical systems of the body use a technique to assess nutritional status, deficiencies, and possible emotional stresses. The kinesiologist works to formulate the best treatment plan for you. The information gathered can cover information such as muscle, organ or gland health, gut health, nutritional health, essential nutrient availability, emotional, mental, and spiritual health, as well as the underlying cause that could be contributing to your imbalance, or stress. Once this information is obtained, an individual treatment plan is explained.

Speech Pathology

What is a voice disorder?

A Voice Disorder occurs when someone changes the way they use their voice, and it is no longer efficient and easy to produce. People underestimate the role of the voice in one’s own identity, and as a person’s voice changes, as does their identity, causing many emotional changes to also take place.

A Voice Disorder develops usually as a combination of problems. A common source is an internal change such as development of a cold or laryngitis which may cause a change in the way someone uses their voice. That person may continue to use their voice as much as they did previous to this problem, but because they have a sore or dry throat they start to compensate for the pain of their sore throat by using their voice differently. This cold may have been produced by another source which may be external such as air-conditioning.

Other external sources which may directly influences the voice are; alcohol, dust, medication, things which affect the mucosa or lining of the vocal folds. A third source of disorganisation is an emotional source. Voices have people behind them with a number of
personalities and stresses that can drastically affect one’s voice. Your voice is your carrier of your emotion. Thus emotions affect your voice.

Some people just feel their voice does not represent them well, and they don’t know what to do to change the way they sound. Gabrielle is experienced in aiding the production of a person’s natural voice’, one which reflects their inner being.

What is Dyspraxia?

Dyspraxia is a neurologically based developmental disability which is present from birth. Dyspraxia is a motor planning disorder, not a muscular deficit.

What is Speech / Articulation?

This is the process of using the articulators to produce speech sounds. The articulators include the lips, teeth, tongue, hard palate and soft palate. The pharynx and larynx also play a role in speech production, as does the jaw. The nasal cavity and nose also are indicated in affecting speech.

What is Stuttering?

“Stuttering is a disorder in which speech is interrupted by repeated movements and fixed postures of the speech mechanism. These interruptions may be accompanied by signs of struggle and tension.

The speech disruptions of stuttering range from mild to severe and stuttering may also be quite variable within individuals. For example, in preschool-age children, stuttering may come and go over days or months. In older children and adults, stuttering may vary according to the communicative context.”

Acupuncture, located within the broader field of Chinese Medicine, is part of an extensive and complex system of theory and practice that has been developed and refined over more than two thousand years.

The holistic perspective of acupuncture is based on the idea that no single part can be understood except in its relation to the whole. A symptom must be viewed as part of the totality of the person’s entire bodily pattern, as well as the person’s place in an often complex material and psychological-emotional world.

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile, single-use, disposable needles into specific sites (acupuncture points) along the body’s energy pathways (meridians) to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of energy, or Qi, through the body.

Acupuncture can benefit you in many areas of your life such as:

  • Women’s health: painful/irregular periods, premenstrual symptoms, preconception care.
  • Pregnancy care: morning sickness, reflux, fatigue, pre-birth treatment, labour preparation.
  • Menopause: any symptoms you may have when this time comes.
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Body aches and pains: lower back pain, sciatica, acute muscle spasm; neck and shoulder symptoms; knee pain, repetitive strain injuries.
  • Post-surgical recovery and chronic and acute pain management.
  • Digestive disorders: constipation, bloating, nausea, reflux.
  • Respiratory problems: acute & chronic sinusitis, hayfever, recovery from colds & flu.
  • Emotional upsets: treatment supports management of stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia.

It is an alternative therapy focusing on drug-free pain relief.

Our Treatments

Treatment may involve therapies such as:

  • Acupuncture: involves the use of fine, sterile pins at specific points on the body.
  • LASER Acupuncture: involves the use of a medical LASER, and is used in the same manner as acupuncture pins. A great option for children, and people with needle phobia.
  • Auricular Therapy: uses a unique system of acupuncture points on the ears. Auricular (ear) points are stimulated using therapeutic ear seeds
  • Moxibustion: is a gentle warming technique used to treat acupuncture points that have become cold.
  • Guasha & Cupping: this is a method of treatment used to relieve longstanding muscle aches and pains.
  • Lifestyle Management: this is considered an important component of health maintenance. Discussion during consultation will address such things as diet, exercise and stress management.

Sports Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is the focus on recovery and strengthening after an injury. It incorporates assessment, therapy, re-assessment and ultimately preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of reinjury.

Return to play - most athletes will want to return to playing and competing as soon as possible, however an effective program will involve conversations between the player, coaches, parents and medical team to determine when the athlete is ready and able to
return to play.

Oasis Health has a wide variety of tools to aid and facilitate the road to recovery.

Most importantly, the Chiropractors at Oasis Health work with their patients to maintain peak physical condition, as well as the treatment of specific injuries. The better shape your spine is in, the less likely you are to suffer from injuries and the better performance you will achieve.

What is Auriculotherapy and how can it help you?

Auriculotherapy is a gentle, non-invasive, micro-current stimulation of the external ear used to relieve conditions in other parts of the body. It is a powerful therapy that can both identify and treat specific body systems, parts or functions that are in disharmony.

Auriculotherapy is based on the entire body being mapped on the external ear. The body can be treated by stimulation of the structure of the ear due to the nerve connections between the ear and the brain. Stimulation of the points identified under stress has a desired effect on the brain which subsequently effects the organ or region of the body associated with the point.

Auriculotherapy has been researched extensively and has been shown to be effective in many health conditions. Amongst many other conditions this technique is especially useful for all forms of stress, anxiety, depression, adrenal burnout, chronic and acute muscular aches and pains, migraines, insomnia, tinnitus, hormonal issues, addictions, poor concentration, etc.
